D&J Bistro Upcoming events.
February’s
After 37 wonderful years, it is time for D&J Bistro to say goodbye.
However ,We will still be open till 2/14 Valentine’s Day
I (Masato)personally will be at restaurant between 1/13 -1/31 to appreciate our patrons .And say goodbye for last time !
Before the U.S. economy deteriorated on “Black Monday” on October 19, 1987, Dominique and Jacqueline had the idea to open a more casual French restaurant, a bistro for everyone. Guests could build their own five course dinner from an unlimited menu for $19.95. We had instant success and never looked back.
The name D&J reflects their initials, although some customers were confused and thought the “J” stood for a Japanese chef. This was even mentioned on the television show Check, Please! I was fortunate to be their first chef and their last.
It is almost unheard of for a restaurant to remain open this long. Over the years, many friends, after learning what I do for a living, have said the same thing: “That is such a hard business.” And they are right. It has required long hours and perseverance. It has not always been easy being at work while others were out enjoying their free time. I have been in this business for nearly 50 years, and it has required dedication every single day.
At D&J Bistro, we did not just celebrate holidays like New Year’s Eve or Christmas. We created our own traditions and events: Bastille Day, Beaujolais Nouveau, Julie and Julia nights, car rallies, and D-Day celebrations to honor the American soldiers who helped liberate France. These moments made our restaurant more than a place to eat. It became a place to gather, celebrate, and belong. Food brings joy, connection, and memories, and that has been my life’s work.
None of this happened alone. Our success was built by an incredible team: our front staff, servers, bartenders, bussers, kitchen staff, and our dishwashers who worked tirelessly day in and day out. On many New Year’s Eves, while others were celebrating, I stood side-by-side with our dishwasher to get the job done. That teamwork made all the difference. Our foundation was strong because of our people.
Carlos, Jose, and Francisco have worked with us for more than 25 years. And of course, none of this would have been possible without the leadership of Stéphane and Rafael. I also remember the late Mike Smith who work with us longest, started as bartender and became server. I imagine him watching from heaven now, saying, “Hey man, we had a blast.” And I reply, “Yes indeed, Mike—we really did man.”
To every member of our team, past and present, thank you. Your dedication, loyalty, and hard work meant everything to us.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to our customers, friends, and community for 37 unforgettable years. It has been our honor to be a part of your lives and to be able to call Lake Zurich our home. We are grateful for your enduring support. Thank you for sharing your treasured moments with our D&J family. You made this journey possible.
With appreciation and gratitude,
